Modular Typography Cyanotypes: A hands-on activity and lecture with Kelli Anderson at Minnesota Grove
North Grove (corner of 24th Street) adjacent to 1275 Minnesota Street

Join graphic designer and author Kelli Anderson for a two-part workshop mimicking a lesson from Josef Albers' classroom at the Bauhaus, where he developed an alphabet/puzzle called Kombinations-Schrift. With his students, Albers used Kombinations-Schrift to contemplate how letters could be crafted from a minimum number of modules/parts while remaining harmonious and easy to read, with an even rhythm.
In the first part of the workshop, participants will craft letterforms using 11 tiny, geometric building blocks taken from Anderson’s interactive book, Alphabet in Motion. These designs will then be placed atop light-sensitive paper and exposed to sunlight, creating a cyanotype.
The second half of the workshop will further explore Albers' letterform puzzle, and how the concept of modularity informed art and design in the 20th century. Space is limited.

Saturday, July 25: 2–3 PM

Author and paper engineer Kelli Anderson will sign copies of her new pop-up book camera, This Book is a Camera, published by Katherine Small Gallery

Handmade Utopia: Back-to-the-Land Architecture in Northern California
Slideshow, talk and advance book signing with David Jacob Kramer and Michael Schmelling
The Lounge at 1275 Minnesota Street

Half a century ago, a legion of young idealists dropped out of society and went “back to the land,” creating a patchwork of utopian communes across Northern California. The SFABF previews Handmade Utopia: Architectural Vestiges of the Back to the Land Movement, forthcoming from D.A.P. and Edition Patrick Frey. A book that tracks down the rogue souls still committed to this way of life, Handmade Utopia captures their hand-built, otherworldly residences.
Join David Jacob Kramer and photographer Michael Schmelling for a slideshow and discussion of the current pulse of the movement and its legacy, followed by a signing of advance copies.
