NEW YORK THEN 1986–1992
VIVIENNE MARICEVIC IN CONVERSATION WITH SCOTT EWALT

Saturday, September 26, 3–4 PM
New York Then 1986–1992 brings together a striking series of black and white portraits taken by photographer Vivienne Maricevic in late 1980s and early 1990s New York. Working in close collaboration with her subjects, Maricevic photographed trans performers, artists and sex workers who inhabited the dressing rooms, apartments and nightlife spaces of downtown Manhattan and Times Square. The photographs capture moments of conscious self presentation where eroticism meets agency. Bold, vulnerable and self possessed, the images reveal individuals defining how they wished to be seen. For this event, Maricevic will speak with Scott Ewalt, with whom she is collaborating on the current exhibition LIVE SEX ACTS with Times Square Space. Pre-order here.

Materials will be provided to make and exchange with a stranger a tiny diary for the occasion of the day. Pre-order here.

Saturday, September 26, 5:15–6:45 PM
New York graffiti's golden age is immortalized in You Weren't There: ’90s Graffiti in New York, Hatje Cant's 496-page compendium of photographs and artist interviews gathered by gallerist Hugo Martinez—who may just have become, with this book, the movement's greatest champion. For this Saturday evening event, Martinez will be joined by Danielle Becker, also of Martinez Gallery, and curator, critic and editor Octavio Zaya, alongside a consortium of ’90s graffiti artists and contributors to the book. Book tagging to follow. Pre-order limit 2 per person.

KELLI ANDERSON PAPER CAMERA-MAKING WORKSHOP
ARTBOOK@ MoMA PS1 BOOKSTORE

Sunday, September 27, 3–5 PM
This event is a hands-on primer in the behavior of light. In this free, family-friendly workshop, This Book is a Camera author Kelli Anderson will teach participants how to make working paper pinhole cameras that produce large-format (4x5") paper negatives. She will demonstrate how to fold pre-cut pieces of lightproof black paper and use Elmer's glue to shape it into a camera obscura. Packets of photo paper will be provided. The resulting camera will demonstrate how a structure as humble as a folded piece of paper can tap into the intrinsic properties of light to produce a photograph. First-come, first-served (the bookstore will have 25 camera-making "kits," but can accommodate additional attendees who are interested in the lecture content.) Pre-order here.
