Artbook at MoMA PS1 presents Jin Mei and Chang Yuchen launching 'Jin Mei: jm'

Sunday, March 15, from 4–5:30 PM EST, Artbook at MoMA PS1 Bookstore presents "At the Age of 50, I picked up a paintbrush again," a talk by artist Jin Mei live-interpreted by her daughter, artist Chang Yuchen, in celebration of the new book, Jin Mei: jm. Jin Mei will speak about her art and life, and the unexpected turn of becoming an artist in her sixties. The talk will be followed by a Q&A and signing.

The publication Jin Mei: jm, along with some of the artist's new drawings, will be available for purchase at Artbook @ MoMA PS1.

Artbook at MoMA PS1 presents Jin Mei and Chang Yuchen launching 'Jin Mei: jm'

Jin Mei was born in Shanxi in 1961 and attended the School of Art at Shanxi University in 1982. After graduation, she worked as an art editor for a magazine. In 1993, she opened her own business, Jin Mei Flower Shop, through which she supported the artistic practice of her family. Jin Mei picked up a paintbrush again at the age of fifty. The book of her drawings, titled Jin Mei: jm was published in 2024 by How Many Books. The same year she had her first solo exhibition at Kiang Malingue, Hong Kong, and launched a fashion collaboration with Home Society, Shanghai. In 2025, Jin Mei participated in a residency at Anaya, Jinshanling.

Chang Yuchen works in an interdisciplinary manner—writing as weaving, drawing as translation, teaching as hospitality, commerce as social experiment (see Use Value), and publishing as a dandelion spreading its seeds. She is also an advocate for the art of her mother, Jin Mei. Chang Yuchen is a recipient of the New York Public Library Picture Collection Artist Fellowship, the Queens Art Fund New Work Grant, the The Poetry Project Curatorial Fellowship, the Huayu Youth Award, and the Luminarts Cultural Foundation Fellowship, among others. She has shown and performed her work at Walker Art Center, Pioneer Works, Beijing Commune, the High Line, Carnegie Museum of Art, Amant, Artists Space, Para Site, and Tai Kwun Contemporary. She has been an artist-in-residence at Triangle Arts Association, Smack Mellon, Asymmetry Art Foundation, MASS MoCA, the Museum of Arts and Design, and the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop. Yuchen has written for publications including Heichi Magazine, Press and Fold, Art in Print, and Randian, and she currently teaches in the Dance MFA program at Bennington College. She is the co-author of Myungah Hyon and Chang Yuchen: Book Book.
