A Self-guided Tour through TIME: Jason Fulford at the Los Angeles Athletic Club

Join ARTBOOK | D.A.P., The Los Angeles Athletic Club, The Soon Institute and Jason Fulford for a self-guided tour through TIME, in celebration of Fulford’s highly sought-after photobook Hotel Oracle.

Saturday, February 8
Noon to 3:00pm
Los Angeles Athletic Club
431 West 7th Street, Los Angeles

A Self-guided Tour through TIME: Jason Fulford at the Los Angeles Athletic Club

Hotel Oracle was released in October, 2013, and sold out quickly in the U.S. Over the course of the year, Fulford has organized a series of performances which run parallel to the narrative in the book, each taking a mundane location or activity related to a hotel, and charging it with meaning through storytelling. Taken together, these performances conjure the Hotel Oracle in surprising, far-flung, ephemeral pieces, from a room in New York to a doorman in Paris, a spa in Tokyo, a pool in Los Angeles, a shuttle van in Philadelphia, a laundry in San Francisco, a wine cellar in Milan, etc. The performances continue through May/June of 2014, when the final event takes place at Photomonth Krakow.

On February 8, guests are invited to meet in the lounge of the landmark 134-year-old Los Angeles Athletic Club, where Fulford will be on hand to sign 30 rare and precious copies of the book (available for purchase but limited to one per guest) and hand out a custom map for a self-guided tour through TIME. Guests are invited to linger over drinks and snacks for sale at the bar, or explore the club to encounter Fulford’s newest set of evocative interventions.

“To explore without a map is a wonderful thing, but here Fulford takes one on a 'drunken' tour of the dream world. Hotel Oracle reminds me of Jean Cocteau's Orpheus not because of the style, but just the thought of 'Death' leading a living one into the Underworld. It makes sense, but then it also doesn't make sense. Hotel Oracle may or may not be a hotel, but I like to think of it as a hotel that is in the head, and somehow Fulford got into my head and is actually having a conversation with me. Am I going mad, or is that what art's all about?” -Tosh Berman
