ARTBOOK, Swiss Institute & DIS Magazine Launch #artselfie

Sunday, March 8, from 5-7PM, ARTBOOK and Swiss Institute invite you to join DIS Magazine for the launch of DIS: #artselfie, published by Jean Boîte Éditions.

In his Introduction, Douglas Coupland writes, "Selfies are the second cousin of the air guitar. Selfies are the proud parents of the dick pic. Selfies are, in some complex way, responsible for the word 'frenemy.' Selfies are, in some not overly complex way, responsible for the vogue of younger men shaving their body hair.
 I sometimes wonder what selfies would look like in North Korea…"

"What if we’re all nothing but ants? Our parents maybe told us we were creative if we really tried to be, but it never sounded quite real, and maybe they were just asking us to fulfill their own wishes that somehow got thwarted along the way."

"Enter the #artselfie. It solves a lot of problems. It’s you plus it’s... art! Sort of. It’s a selfie except instead of an Instagram hashtag applied overtop a normal selfie, the artselfie instead contains upscale branding semiotics within the frame itself. Crop and apply a hashtag and suddenly you don’t feel like an ant any more. At least not for a short while – until you find a better pose with better lighting, or, best of all, a Rothko that flatters your complexion. Wait... is that a Jeff Koons balloon dog over there?"
