Saturday, December 9 at 2PM, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures will celebrate the release of Agnès Varda: Director’s Inspiration with a conversation on Varda’s art, life and legacy with book editor Matt Severson and contributing authors Manohla Dargis and Peter Debruge. Purchase tickets here.

The Academy Museum presents 'Agnes Varda: Director's Inspiration Book Signing and Conversation'

Trailblazing French filmmaker Agnès Varda (1928–2019) impacted cinema from her first feature, which paved the way for the French New Wave, through her final works—an expansive seven-decade oeuvre that includes Cleo from 5 to 7, Vagabond, and the Academy Award–nominated Faces Places.

To celebrate the museum’s new book Agnès Varda: Director’s Inspiration, please join the Academy Museum for a discussion on Varda’s art, life, and legacy. The book’s editor, Margaret Herrick Library director Matt Severson, will be joined by contributing authors Manohla Dargis (chief film critic, New York Times) and Peter Debruge (chief film critic, Variety).

Accompanying the museum’s exhibition on Varda (on view through January 25, 2025), the book incorporates original materials from the filmmaker’s archive, a previously unpublished oral history interview, and personal reflections by collaborators and admirers including Jane Birkin, JR, Martin Scorsese, Viva, and Chloé Zhao.
