|   |   | Karine Laval: PoolscapesText by Claire Barliant.
Poolscapes brings together two bodies of work—The Pool (2002–05) and Poolscapes (2009–12)—by French-born, Brooklyn-based photographer Karine Laval (born 1971), both focusing on the motif of the swimming pool. Presenting public pools in urban and natural environments throughout Europe and private pools in the US in two distinct sections, the book is arranged chronologically and shows an evolution in tone and depth, from the photographic to the painterly. The Pool series invites us into a sun-bleached public pool at midday, evocative of childhood memories and the experience of leisure and bathing. Gradually these geometric lines and familiar architectural structures give way to the abstract, often blurred shapes and colors of the Poolscapes pictures that oscillate between representation and abstraction. Here the pool becomes a metaphor, a mirror whose surface reflects the surrounding world but is also a gateway into a realm where bathers are distorted and fragmented.

Musee Labanya Maitra Laval’s photographs can bring a variety of emotions to the fore, but the one that stands out the most is the way it entices the reader to jump into the closest body of water. And stay there. Feature Shoot Sara Rosen Through the eyes of Karine Laval, life by the pool becomes a fantastical escape from it all. Feature Shoot Miss Rosen Slip away into a world where fun in the sun never ends. The Eye of Photography Shows an evolution in tone and depth, from the real to the imagined, from the photographic to the painterly. |

| | FROM THE ARTBOOK BLOG CORY REYNOLDS | DATE 4/5/2019 We are delighted to host French photographer Karine Laval signing Poolscapes, her new book from Steidl, in AIPAD Booth 629 Friday, April 5 at 4 PM. It would be hard to imagine a more evocative book, filled with photographs that are both seductive and eerie, surreal and melancholy, in the words of essayist Claire Barliant. "Swimming pools, at least in hibernal regions, connote the fleeting, quicksilver days of summer; with their promise of cool relief from the heat, they offer ease, relaxation and joy—feelings that are cruelly ephemeral." continue to blogFROM THE ARTBOOK BLOG CORY REYNOLDS | DATE 8/4/2018 Featured image is reproduced from Karine Laval: Poolscapes, a staff favorite summer release that's sure to sell out by Labor Day. Recommended by LensCulture and The Guardian, this gorgeous volume—produced to the exacting standards of world renowned photography book publisher, Steidl—collects photographs made at public pools in Europe and private pools in the U.S., as well as staged underwater shots and images from Laval's travels.
