Contemporary Figurative Painting

Contemporary Figurative Painting

Alfred Stieglitz wrote, "Portrait painting is doomed. Painting portraiture will become obsolete when the time arrives that photographers will have learned something about portraiture in its deeper sense and when the public is weaned from the stupid superstition that a thing painted is necessarily better than a thing done through the new medium, photography." Over the past century, the Constructivists, Futurists, Dadaists and Conceptualists all announced their intention to kill painting, and indeed the death of painting continues to be championed and dissected by such contemporary critics as Douglas Crimp and Yve-Alain Bois. And yet… today, figure painting is experiencing an unprecedented revival, with artists like John Currin, Peter Doig, Marlene Dumas, Lucian Freud, Wangechi Mutu, Elizabeth Peyton, Neo Rauch, Gerhard Richter, Dana Schutz and Luc Tuymans among the leaders of the charge. Our Artbook Curated Library on Contemporary Figurative Painting selects the key titles on contemporary figurative painters.

Lucian Freud: The Self-portraits

Text by David Dawson, Joseph Koerner, Jasper Sharp, Sebastian Smee.

The artist stripped bare by himself: Lucian Freud’s self-portraits redefine the genre

In 1964 Lucian Freud set his students at the Norwich College of Art an assignment: to paint naked self-portraits and to make them revealing, telling, believable ... really shameless.” It was advice that the artist was often to follow himself. Visceral, unflinching and often nude, Freud’s self-portraits chart his biography and give us an insight into the development of his style.

These paintings provide the viewer with a constant reminder of the artist’s overwhelming presence, whether he is confronting the viewer directly or only present as a shadow or in . . . .go to book page >>

Peter Saul: Pop, Funk, Bad Painting and More

Text by Annabelle Ténčze, John Yau.

New York–based painter Peter Saul (born 1934) has consistently challenged the conventions of art, history and politics with his radical, unrefined style. Positioned emphatically outside of the canon of pop art, Saul’s exuberantly grotesque works exhibit an ironic and caustic humor that simultaneously breaks down and celebrates his subjects. Influenced by both French academic painting and MAD magazine, he has become a profound, albeit unconventional, history painter, chronicling the ridiculous and terrible at the top from Reagan to Trump.

This catalog covers the artist’s oeuvre since the late 1950s and presents many previously unseen paintings, works on paper and archival materials.

Albert York

Text by Bruce Hainley, Calvin Tomkins, Fairfield Porter.

“Reproducing some 60 paintings and drawings along with vintage press clippings, Albert York is a gorgeous, serious-minded thing.” Martin Herbert, ArtReview

Art critic Calvin Tomkins has called Albert York (1928–2009) the most highly admired unknown artist in America.” Over the course of three decades, York’s small paintings of landscapes, flowers, cows and figures have proven among the most quietly transcendent pictures of our time. Because he worked on the east end of Long Island, far from the center of the Manhattan art world, York’s art remained something of a secret, albeit one with a devoted following. His admirers included Fairfield Porter, . . . .go to book page >>

Ken Price: Drawings

Text by Jean-Pierre Criqui.

Though Los Angeles artist Ken Price (1935–2012) is best known as a sculptor in ceramic, drawing was always a central component of his art: For me drawing is really flexible,” he once stated, and I use it in different ways. It’s my way of developing ideas.” Ken Price: Drawings brings out this facet of Price’s work fully for the first time.

Featuring 78 of Price’s works on paper—all reproduced for the first time, many at actual size—this book is the most comprehensive ever published on the subject. Technical innovations like five-color printing capture Price’s drawings in all their wayward vitality. . . . .go to book page >>
