Contemporary Figurative Painting

Contemporary Figurative Painting

Alfred Stieglitz wrote, "Portrait painting is doomed. Painting portraiture will become obsolete when the time arrives that photographers will have learned something about portraiture in its deeper sense and when the public is weaned from the stupid superstition that a thing painted is necessarily better than a thing done through the new medium, photography." Over the past century, the Constructivists, Futurists, Dadaists and Conceptualists all announced their intention to kill painting, and indeed the death of painting continues to be championed and dissected by such contemporary critics as Douglas Crimp and Yve-Alain Bois. And yet… today, figure painting is experiencing an unprecedented revival, with artists like John Currin, Peter Doig, Marlene Dumas, Lucian Freud, Wangechi Mutu, Elizabeth Peyton, Neo Rauch, Gerhard Richter, Dana Schutz and Luc Tuymans among the leaders of the charge. Our Artbook Curated Library on Contemporary Figurative Painting selects the key titles on contemporary figurative painters.

Lisa Yuskavage: Wilderness

Text by Christopher Bedford, Helen Molesworth, Heidi Zuckerman. Interview by Mary Weatherford.

Though she is arguably best known for the voluptuous female nudes that populate her paintings, Lisa Yuskavage’s work is just as focused on the ethereal settings in which these subjects appear. Yuskavage creates finely detailed landscapes that blur the line between the fantastical and the familiar, melding abstraction with realism to depict self-contained worlds. These outdoor scenes defy conventions of landscape painting with surreal color palettes of lush greens and delicate pinks, cast in a gauzy light quality that highlights the almost magical nature of her paintings.

Published in conjunction with a joint exhibition between the Aspen Art Museum in Colorado . . . .go to book page >>

FORTHCOMING

AFRICOBRA: Messages to the People

Foreword by Chana Sheldon. Text by Leslie Guy, Jeffreen Hayes.

AfriCOBRA (African Commune of Bad Relevant Artists) was founded on the South Side of Chicago in 1968 by a group of five young Black artists. Today, it is one of the oldest continuously active American art collectives. The pronunciation—Af-FREE-co-bruh—emphasizes the second syllable, signaling the group’s central principle grounded in Black liberation: creative expression reflecting the Black experience and Black influences.
AfriCOBRA’s founding artists—Jeff Donaldson, Jae Jarrell, Wadsworth Jarrell, Barbara Jones-Hogu and Gerald Williams—differed in disciplines and artistic vocabularies but were brought together by the common aspiration to create work that speaks directly to Black people utilizing an identifiably Black aesthetic. Amy Sillman: Faux Pas

Edited by Charlotte Houette, François Lancien-Guilberteau, Benjamin Thorel. Foreword by Lynne Tillman.

Since the 1970s, Amy Sillman—a beloved and key figure of the New York art scene—has developed a singular body of work that includes large-scale gestural paintings blending abstraction with representation, as well as zines and iPad animations.

Over the past decade, Sillman has also produced stimulating essays on the practice of art or the work of other artists: for example, reevaluating the work of the abstract expressionists with a queer eye; elaborating on the role of awkwardness and the body in the artistic process; and discussing in depth the role and meanings of color and shape. Jordan Casteel: Within Reach

Edited by Massimiliano Gioni. Foreword by Lisa Phillips. Text by Dawoud Bey, Lauren Haynes, Amanda Hunt. Interviews by Massimiliano Gioni, Thelma Golden.

In her large-scale oil paintings, New York-based artist Jordan Casteel (born 1989) takes up questions of Black subjectivity and representation by examining the gestures, spaces and forms of nonverbal communication that underpin portraiture. There is a certain amount of mindfulness that it requires ... to be present with someone in a moment.” she explains. I’ve always had an inclination towards seeing people who might be easily be unseen.”

Published for Casteel’s first solo museum exhibition in New York, this volume brings together 40 large-scale paintings from throughout her career, including works from the celebrated series Visible Man (2013-14) and Nights in . . . .go to book page >>

Barkley L. Hendricks: Basketball

Text by Terry Myers.

The third installment in Skira and Jack Shainman Gallery’s five-volume overview of American artist Barkley L. Hendricks (1945-2017) explores the artist’s relationship to basketball, which provided a significant source of artistic inspiration throughout his life.

In his Basketball series, Hendricks applied his keen compositional sense and stylish use of color to depictions of the sport’s essential elements: hoops, nets, backboards and, of course, basketballs themselves. In one painting, the image of a basketball about to make its way into a hoop is repeated twice on a round canvas; on another circular canvas, the iconic black ribs of a basketball are rendered . . . .go to book page >>

Gladys Nilsson: Honk! Fifty Years of Painting

Text by Marcia Tucker. Interview by Alison M. Gingeras.

Covering five decades and featuring 100 full-color plates, this beautiful volume is Chicago painter Gladys Nilsson’s (born 1940) most comprehensive monograph to date. Though Nilsson is better known for the watercolors she began exhibiting in the mid-1960s as an original member of the Hairy Who, she has dedicated much of her career to painting in acrylic.

This monograph begins with her 1960s paintings on panel and Plexiglas, then considers her 1970s paintings on canvas, including the seven-foot-high Dipped Dick: Adam and Eve after Cranach, whose title characters are surrounded by a menagerie of cavorting plants and animals.
