Celebrate Lars Müller's new Bauhaus facsimile publications at the Schindler House, West Hollywood

Sunday, March 17 from 4–6 PM, the MAK Center for Art and Architecture presents a panel discussion on 100 years of Bauhaus and the legacy of the institution with Michael Boyd (Furniture and Landscape Designer), Mariestella Casciato (Curator of Architecture, Getty Research Institute), Kurt W. Forster (Visiting Professor, Yale School of Architecture), Lars Müller (Designer and Publisher), and Priscilla Fraser (Executive Director, MAK Center for Art & Architecture). This event is free and open to the public. Books will be available for purchase.

Michael Boyd is a landscape, furniture, and architectural designer based in Los Angeles and San Francisco. He is the principal of BoydDesign, a consultancy for the restoration and preservation of modernist architecture, and for collecting modern art and design. He is an internationally renown and published expert on 20th century design and post-war Modernism. His most notable restorations include Paul Rudolph’s Rudolph Townhouse (1975) in New York City and Oscar Niemeyer’s only North American built work besides the U.N. Complex, the Strick House (1964) in Santa Monica. Boyd curated and designed the installation for the design section of the traveling exhibition "Birth of the Cool: California Art, Design, and Culture at Midcentury." He has contributed numerous essays to publications on modernism, including "The Migration of Modernism: From Turn-of-the-Century Vienna to Mid-Century Los Angeles" for "Birth of the Cool" (Prestel, 2007), "Chasing Modern: Ideal and Object" for "Modernist Paradise: Niemeyer House/Boyd Collection" (Rizzoli, 2007), and "R.M. Schindler: Furniture as Micro-Architecture," for "RM Schindler: The Gingold Commissions" (William Stout Publishers, 2007). Boyd is featured in "Collecting Design" by Adam Lindeman (Taschen, 2011).

Maristella Casciato is senior curator and head of architectural collections at the Getty Research Institute. From 2012 to 2015, she was associate director of research at the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) in Montreal. She is formerly professor of the history of architecture at the University of Bologna, a Fulbright Fellow (1992), a Chercheuse Associée aux INHA, Paris (2004), a Mellon Senior Fellow at the CCA (2010), and chair of DOCOMOMO International (2002–10). Her scholarly studies focus on the history of the twentieth-century European architecture and the theory of the conservation of our recent past. Since the late 1990s, she has been engaged in a research project on Pierre Jeanneret and his involvement in the design and construction of Chandigarh. She previously cocurated, with Stanislaus von Moos, the exhibition "Twilight of the Plan: Chandigarh and Brasilia" (2007); contributed to the book "Chandigarh 1956," in collaboration with Ernst Scheidegger (2010); and was cocurator and coauthor, with Tom Avermaete, of "Casablanca Chandigarh: A Report on Modernization" (CCA and Park Books, 2014.)

Kurt W. Forster has taught at Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, ETH Zurich, and Bauhaus University at Weimar and founded and directed research institutes at the Getty Research Center in Los Angeles and the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal. He has organized major exhibitions on Schinkel in Chicago, Carlo Scarpa in Vicenza, Italy, Herzog & de Meuron in Montreal, and for the 2004 Venice Biennale. Forster has published widely on the history of art and architecture. He is a member of the Research Council of the Palladio Center in Vicenza, Italy; the Bauhaus Foundation, Dessau, Germany; and the Accademia di San Lucca in Rome. Forster attended the universities of Berlin, Munich, and Florence and received a Ph.D. from the University of Zurich.

Lars Müller, born in Oslo in 1955 and a Norwegian citizen, has been based in Switzerland since 1963. In 1983 Müller published his first book and, as Lars Müller Publishers, has produced some 600 titles to date. Müller is a passionate educator and has taught at various universities in Switzerland and Europe. Since 2009 he has been a guest lecturer at Harvard University Graduate School of Design GSD. From 2013 to 2015, Müller was the international president of AGI Alliance Graphique Internationale.

Priscilla Fraser has been working on exhibitions, publications, and projects in the field of architecture for over fifteen years. As a senior architect and project manager for the LACMA, she supervised trail-blazing installations such as Chris Burden’s Metropolis II and a James Turrell retrospective, among others. Prior to joining the MAK Center as the non-profit’s Director, Fraser was LACMA’s internal project manager for architect Peter Zumthor’s expansion proposal for the permanent collection space. In New York, Fraser was responsible for exhibitions and publications at the architectural firm of Steven Holl and worked under Barry Bergdoll in the Architecture Department of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).
