Artbook @ MoMA PS1 Bookstore presents Matthew López-Jensen and Chiquita Brujita on Tarot and Community Building

Tarot as a form of creative expression is experiencing renewed interest within museum, artistic, and publishing circles. Tarot’s origin as a teaching tool predates its current association with divination by several hundred years. López-Jensen’s New York City Street Tree Tarot touches both histories and is a celebration of New York City’s street trees and the many acts of stewardship that help nearly 700,000 trees thrive. The recently published deck has its origin as a form of public engagement and storytelling. Meanwhile, tarot also played an important role in the creation of the Brooklyn Brujeria Festival, recently celebrating its ninth iteration. López-Jensen and Chiquita Brujita will share the backstories behind their work and discuss how centering community and storytelling has been central to their practices. Both will offer versions of one-on-one readings with guests after the Q&A.

Matthew López-Jensen is a Bronx-based artist whose work combines social practice, walking, photography, planting, cleaning, mapping, and research. He is a Citizen Pruner, New York City Parks Super Steward, community gardener, and environmental advocate. He has participated in residency programs at MacDowell, New York City Urban Field Station, Guild Hall, the Queens Museum, Wave Hill, L.M.C.C., among others. López-Jensen is a Guggenheim Fellow, and his work is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The National Gallery of Art, and the Brooklyn Museum, among other institutions. López-Jensen teaches at Fordham University and Parsons School of Design. He received his MFA from the University of Connecticut and BA from Rice University. López-Jensen was the 2023 artist-in-residence with the Erie Canal and his book The Work and the Water: Labor and Landscapes Along the Erie Canal (Inventory Press) was published September 2025. His first monograph, Park Wonder (Paper Crown Press) was published in 2017. His latest book, New York City Street Tree Tarot (Verlag Kettler 2026) brings together his years of work celebrating street trees and stewardship.

Chiquita Brujita is a third-generation Nuyorican Bruja, performance artist, and conjurer of philanthropic fiestas. Best known for her events and eponymous line of prayer candles, she has worked in partnership with local institutions including Brooklyn Museum, El Museo del Barrio, BRIC, and Bushwick’s House of Yes. Her work has been featured by ABC, the BBC, the New York Times, Remezcla, People en Espanol, NYLON, Cosmopolitan, and other fine publications. She is the founder of Brooklyn Brujeria, a social enterprise and creative house, and hosts the annual Brooklyn Brujeria Festival. Chiquita Brujita is a fire sign.
