On July 4, 2026, the United States will celebrate 250 years since the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. Adopting a stance from the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, Theo Deutinger (born 1971), author of the bestselling Handbook of Tyranny, opposes ongoing attempts to rewrite American history, and thus the history of Europe. All About U.S.: 250 Years of the United States of America challenges the manifold myths—from white lies to monolithic propaganda—that have contributed to the idea of American exceptionalism. Participation in the transatlantic slave trade, a deeply ingrained sense of unlimited expansionism and the spread of half-baked technological innovations mark US–European history as a shared, fraught project. Through its concise, transparent language and fact-based narrative, All About U.S. provides insights into the current state of America, Europe and the world, embedded in a historical context.

Theo Deutinger is an architect, author and curator. He founded and heads The Department (TD), a studio working at the intersection of architecture, research and visualisation. He became known in 2018 for Handbook of Tyranny, a mapping of the architecture of control such as refugee camps, prisons and border installations. Ultimate Atlas: Logbook of Spaceship Earth (2019) and Joy and Fear: An Illustrated Report on Modernity (2023) followed. Deutinger publishes regularly on European urban culture and global resource distribution, and lives between Europe and the Netherlands.

Shane Reiner-Roth is a writer, photographer, and educator based in Los Angeles. He has written on art, architecture, design, and urbanism for publications including The Los Angeles Times, Dwell, The Architect’s Newspaper, Dezeen, Untapped Journal, and The New York Review of Architecture.
