Ben Watts: Montauk Dreaming

Ben Watts: Montauk Dreaming

"An homage to [Montauk], filled with colourful, high-contrast snaps of surf, sand and sun.” –Sunshine Flint, Conde Nast Traveler

Montauk Dreaming is a vibrant celebration of the Long Island town that London-born photographer Ben Watts (born 1967) has called home since 1995. A "paradise three hours outside the walls of the greatest city in the world," as Watts calls it, Montauk has exploded in recent years, going from a sleepy beach town to a major summer cultural destination. An established commercial and fashion photographer, Watts regularly shoots for publications such as The New York Times Magazine, GQ and Interview. This volume collects the photographs that Watts takes on his days off, of his friends and family at the beaches and the parties that inspire his colorful style. Primarily shot on an iPhone with Watts' own photo app and set of filters rendering the beaches in hallucinatory, sun-drenched neon hues, Montauk Dreaming captures the lifestyle and spirit of a summer on the beach.

The Editors

The pictures depict Watts’ friends and family on the beaches and the parties that inspired his colorful, bold style. Mainly shot on an iPhone with the photographer’s own photo application and set of filters giving the beaches an hallucinatory, sun-drenched neon hue. ‘Montauk Dreaming’ captures the lifestyle and spirt of the summer on the beach and is now on sale at Damiani.

Conde Nast Traveler

Sunshine Flint

British-born photographer Ben Watts (brother of actress Naomi) has owned a cottage on Lake Montauk since 1998, and his latest book, Montauk Dreaming (Damiani, £29), out this month, is a homage to his adopted home, filled with colourful, high-contrast snaps of surf, sand and sun.

DuJour.com

The Editors

The book shows off the grit and the glamour that makes Montauk something entirely unique and undeniably of the moment.

American Photo

Eugene Reznik

Watts, known for his vibrant commercial photography and scrapbook-like collages, had first gone out there on a shoot for a fashion retailer in 1996. He says he fell in love with the place over night and soon ended up buying a second home there. His latest book, Montauk Dreaming (Damiani 2015), is an intensely colorful and personal look at the exuberance of his time there.
