Mexico: The Land of Charm

Text by Mercurio López Casillas, James Oles.

Mexico: The Land of Charm

A sumptuous clothbound compendium of modern Mexican ephemera from postage stamps to tourist guides

A Chicago Tribune 2021 holiday gift guide pick

This volume gathers a surprising and engaging sampling of 350 pieces of printed matter: material that circulated between the 1910s and the 1960s, with print runs of anywhere from a thousand to tens of thousands of copies. These ephemeral, utilitarian publications—many created by well-known artists and designers—flooded streets, newspaper stands, bookshops and homes, with the common aim of disseminating an idealized image of what is considered typically Mexican.
Drawn from private collections and the holdings of museums, with no claim to completeness, the material in Mexico: The Land of Charm ranges in size from stamps to posters, and includes material such as books, illustrated magazines, photography magazines, songbooks and musical scores, almanacs and calendars, tourist guides and maps. The result is impressive, in terms of both individual examples and the collection as a whole: these images are now a part of Mexican history.
Artists and designers include: José Espert Arcos, Ernesto García Cabral, Jean Charlot, Francisco Díaz de León, Carlos Neve, Mariano Martínez, Carlos Mérida, Diego Rivera, Saturino Herrán, Emily Edwards and Zita Canessi.

The work proves that Mexico is a world capital of graphic exuberance—from vernacular to avant garde to Aztec-inspired art deco—and the book is an invaluable addition to the growing study of Latin American graphic design.

Viva Mexico!

Viva Mexico!

Featured spreads are from Mexico: The Land of Charm, RM's exhilarating new clothbound compendium of modern Mexican ephemera produced from the early 1900s through the 1960s—a staff favorite Holiday Gift Book, 2021! “After four years of Donald Trump’s vicious anti-Mexican jingoism,” essayist and international design authority Steven Heller writes, “it is a welcome relief to refocus my attention on the Mexico known for its prolific and abundant modern art heritage on a par with early-twentieth century Europe and mid-Century United States; the Mexico that also inspired an impressive legacy of political and social (and socialist) design commentary and the progressive periodicals (revistas) that published them; the Mexico that produced a wealth of printed material that can stand beside any of the innovative graphic design and typography from the past. From the treasure trove of the Mexican avant-garde—exhaustively chronicled in the 2010 book and exhibition México Ilustrado: Libros, Revistas y Carteles 1920–1950—to a wellspring of quotidian magazines, newspapers and travel and tourist books, many designed with swagger and flair, Mexico is only now receiving its overdue share of notice in art and design histories. And with this book, much of the nation’s otherwise ephemeral graphic, photographic, and typographic ‘applied art’ is finally receiving the attention it deserves—because this book proves that Mexico is an important link in the history of Western graphic design style and form.” continue to blog
