Bling-bling, grillz, chains: reviewing the history of hip-hop culture in the United States and Germany through accessories
Published with Schmuckmuseum Pforzheim.
Tracing the fascinating rise of hip-hop culture—from its origins in the gritty Bronx of the 1970s to its diffusion across mainstream media worldwide—this volume places particular emphasis on its aesthetic influence in the United States and Germany. Abundantly illustrated, Stories of Hip Hop features portraits of hip-hop icons such as Nas and LL Cool J as well as German national legends such as Freundeskreis and Die Massiven Töne by prominent photographers Martha Cooper, Mikael Väisänen and Normski, to name a few. While reviewing pivotal moments in hip-hop history, the volume underscores the flashy adornments that epitomize its different characters and scenes, from oversize chains, grillz and hoop earrings to custom-made accessories. Album covers and other ephemera merge with studio shots of statement pieces to reveal the networks, identities and aesthetics that have comprised this movement.
