Jennifer Bolande: Landmarks

Edited by Nicholas Frank. Text by Dennis Balk, Jack Bankowsky, Rosetta Brooks, Nicholas Frank, Ingrid Schaffner, Christina Valentine.

Jennifer Bolande: LandmarksFor the past 25 years Jennifer Bolande (born 1957) has engaged in an intuitive form of conceptualism, using a variety of media including photography, sculpture, photo-objects, collage, film, installation and dance, to record or create visual anomalies. Photographer Sharon Lockhart describes her works as “photographic sculptures and sculptural photographs,” terms that are readily applied to Bolande’s best-known work, “Milk Crown”--a porcelain reproduction of Harold Edgerton’s famous 1956 photo of a milk splash. Landmarks is the first monograph on her work. Sequenced and co-designed by the artist, it carries the viewer into and through the sets of elements, themes and narratives that recur and dovetail throughout her work. In addition to images of her most significant works, the catalogue includes a wealth of resource material, providing a view of the artist’s process and fields of interest.

Featured image, "Central and Mountain" (1985), is reproduced from Jennifer Bolande: Landmarks.

FROM THE BOOK
"Bolande's work establishes a Romanticists' alignment with the unseen forces of everyday objects and images. An artist firmly in the domain of the contemporary, she redefines the language of the 'Natural Landscape.' Her work facilitates the mysteries and subtlety of phenomena called up and presented, allowing us to experience the world in an unexpected and astounding 'it was right there all the time' kind of way. Providing the viewer, in the field of her ongoing projects of objects and pictures, a glimpse into the perfect worlds within the world."

--Dennis Balk, excerpted from the essay, Jennifer Bolande, an Invitation…
