CORY REYNOLDS | DATE 9/16/2015
Join us on Friday, September 18 from 6-7PM in the ARTBOOK @ MoMA PS1 Magazine Store (just inside the MoMA PS1 Entrance Kiosk) for book signings with Mike Mandel and Christian Patterson as part of the New York Art Book Fair! Mandel and Patterson will sign following their talks in David Senior's Classroom series, which take place from 4-5 and 5-6 PM respectively.
To pre-order copies of Mike Mandel: Good 70s ($125) and Christian Patterson: Bottom of the Lake ($60), email email@example.com.
MIKE MANDEL will sign advance copies of Good 70s, a boxed collection containing facsimiles of seminal, long out-of-print self-published books including the Baseball-Photographer Trading Cards, Myself: Timed Exposures, and Seven Never Before Seen Portraits of Edward Weston, plus previously unpublished work such as Motel Postcards, People in Cars and Mrs. Kilpatric. Select ephemera also enclosed, including a letter to Mandel from model and muse Charis Wilson regarding her husband, photographer Edward Weston, facsimile contact sheets from the Baseball-Photographer Trading Cards photo shoots, and a pack of 10 of the original 1975 baseball trading cards. Co-published by D.A.P. Publishing and J&L Books.
CHRISTIAN PATTERSON will sign copies of Bottom of the Lake, a 256-page facsimile of his family's telephone book for Fond du Lac ("Bottom of the Lake"), Wisconsin, printed in 1973, soon after Patterson's birth. This artist's book includes found markings and reproductions of materials inserted in the phone book in addition to Patterson's drawings, photographs and marginalia. A book-within-a-book, Bottom of the Lake carefully combines the fact-based phone book with the artist's highly subjective re-imagination of his hometown, playfully juxtaposing different documentary forms and ways of seeing to create a deeply personal, darkly humorous "other" book.
4-5 PM: Mike Mandel will screen a never-before-seen 8mm film from the 1970s. Introduction by Good 70s co-publisher Sharon Helgason Gallagher, followed by a conversation between Mandel and co-publisher Jason Fulford.
5-6 PM: Christian Patterson will present a slideshow and interactive telephone pieces related to his new book, Bottom of the Lake.
The ARTBOOK @ MoMA PS1 Magazine Store (above) is located in the museum Entrance Kiosk at Jackson and 46th Avenues.
