DeYoung Museum presents 'El Anatsui: The Reinvention of Sculpture'

Saturday, October 22 at 1 PM, the de Young Museum and Damiani Books present the west coast launch of El Anatsui: The Reinvention of Sculpture by Chika Okeke-Agulu and Okwui Enwezor. Join Okeke-Agulu and Natasha Becker, curator of African art at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, in a discussion of key arguments in the book, what led to its making, and its relationship with the eponymous exhibition at Haus der Kunst in Munich in 2019. New Museum presents the launch of 'El Anatsui: The Reinvention of Sculpture'

Chika Okeke-Agulu, an artist, critic and art historian, is director of African American studies and professor of art and archaeology in the departments of African American Studies and Art and Archaeology at Princeton University. He is co-editor of Nka: Journal of Contemporary African Art and writes the blog Ọfọdunka. His books include El Anatsui: The Reinvention of Sculpture (Damiani, 2022), African Artists: From 1882 to Now (Phaidon, 2021), Yusuf Grillo: Painting, Lagos, Life (Skira, 2020), and Obiora Udechukwu: Line, Image, Text (Skira, 2016). His writings have appeared in The New York Times, Artforum, The Guardian (Lagos), October, Huffington Post, South Atlantic Quarterly, Art Journal, and Parkett. His many awards include Honorable Mention, Arnold Rubin Outstanding Publication Award, Arts Council of African Studies Association (2017); The Melville J. Herskovits Prize for the most important scholarly work in African studies published in English during the preceding year (African Studies Association, 2016); and, Frank Jewett Mather Award for Distinction in Art Criticism (College Art Association, 2016). He is a fellow of the British Academy.
