Education has changed radically, in both theory and practice, in a very short period. So too--form following function--has the architecture of school buildings: classrooms have been supplanted by "learning domains" and assembly halls have evolved into veritable plazas. This topical and revealing volume presents architectural developments in primary and secondary educational institutions over the past two decades. Featuring images and texts by architects and theorists including Dolf Broekhuizen, Like Bijlsma, Eireen Schreurs, Paul Groenendijk and Ton Verstegen, this study proves that the role of architecture in education is much more than a translation of contemporary pedagogical theory into brick and mortar.
