Critical Geography

Picturing the Forces Shaping Space, Place, and Community

Edited by Steven Evans, Max Fields. Text by Guy Debord, Rebecca Solnit.

Image- and text-based practices that map out inequality in postcolonial contexts

Borrowing its name from the subdiscipline of geography that challenges power structures, inequality and the dominant ideologies shaping physical space, Critical Geography explores how places and communities are influenced by social, economic, ecological and political forces. By critically analyzing these dynamics, the artists and writers in the publication provoke conversations around social justice, environmental sustainability and transformative change. Critical Geography surveys a diverse range of image-based practices from artists whose works shed light on systemic oppression, violence and urgent environmental concerns and from image-makers who appropriate mapping, social media and technology to explore inequality in colonial and postcolonial contexts.
Artists include: Mónica Alcázar-Duarte, Adrian L. Burrell, Binh Danh, Ana Teresa Fernández, Caleb Fung, Shona Illingworth, Libuše Jarcovjáková, Ou Zhihang, C. Rose Smith, Stephanie Syjuco, Brad Temkin.
