Seeking Revelation: German Romantic Prints and Drawings
Edited with text by Nikki Otten. Text by Cordula Grewe, Stephanie O'Rourke.
The German Romantics' quest for empirical, philosophical and metaphysical understanding, as shown through prints and works on paper
Published with Milwaukee Art Museum.
During the German Romantic movement (ca. 1770–1850), artists attempted to gain a deeper understanding of universal questions through the process of making. These tumultuous times led them to reconsider expansive topics such as the divine, national identity, nature, science and selfhood. Seeking Revelation reflects on German Romantic artists' primary subjects through scholarly essays on religion, landscape, travel and the community of artists known as the Nazarenes. The catalog features over 100 works by artists such as Caspar David Friedrich, Philipp Otto Runge and Johann Friedrich Overbeck.
