Hundreds of handmade protest signs capture the humor, anger, creativity and political concerns of ordinary Americans in 2025
From just before Donald Trump’s second inauguration, and onward toward the midterm elections, photographer Susan Meiselas recorded the multi-colored, hand-drawn signs of political fun and fury that American citizens made and carried to the “No Kings” demonstrations she attended in NYC and Washington, DC. Accompanied by an enriching essay by Eduardo Cadava, a scroll of Trump's Executive Orders and the counterpoint of a fragmentary found history of contemporary newspaper headlines by Laura Wexler, No Kings is a mirror of how ordinary people are determined to make their voices heard. Susan Meiselas (born 1948) studied at Sarah Lawrence College and Harvard University, taking up photography in the early 1970s. She is credited with being one of the first to work with color in documentary photography, a controversial decision when she was shooting the conflict in Nicaragua in the late 1970s. Meiselas joined Magnum Photos in 1976 and has worked as a freelance photographer since then.
