Amidst the massive political upheavals in Europe in the early 1990s, Manifesta, the European Biennale of Contemporary Art, was born. With the goal of initiating a dialogue across the European borders and between young artists and their public, Manifesta has become one of the most important and dynamic platforms for debating current positions in art. Since 1996, the exhibition has taken place in various countries and cities throughout Europe; Manifesta 4 will be spending spring and summer 2002 in Frankfurt/Main. Predominantly young artists who live and work in Europe will be selected by a team of three independent curators from Sofia, Barcelona, and Paris.
