Alex Katz (born 1927) is an American painter who is celebrated for his iconic portraits of contemporary society and his crisp, confident articulation of color. Pristine flat surfaces, dramatic cropping and economy of line are hallmarks of the artist's work. When Katz first began painting in the early 1950s, his now-signature minimal aesthetic was perceived as a reaction to Abstract Expressionism; it would later register as an anticipation of Pop art, albeit one that ultimately outlasted the movement. This volume of Skira's Milestones series examines Katz's historic career and major works as related by the artist himself. With an interview with the artist by art historian, curator and critic Robert Storr, drawings and handwritten notes and fresh studio photography, we receive a rare backstage glimpse into Katz's art as the artist approaches his 100th birthday.
