Erik Kessels & Thomas Sauvin: Talk Soon

Text by Kingston Trinder.

Erik Kessels & Thomas Sauvin: Talk Soon

A wordless, quarantined dialogue in flipbook form

Every day, throughout that tumultuous spring of 2020, Dutch artist Erik Kessels (born 1966) and French artist Thomas Sauvin (born 1983) sent one another idiosyncratic, uncaptioned photographs, catalyzing an organic, free-associative exchange of some 120 archival images. Atelier Éditions’ author Kingston Trinder then composed an equally free-associative, altogether whimsical narrative with which to further entwine the duo’s eclectic photographs. These two archives of vernacular photography, one from the East, the other from the West, achieve a dialogue through the recurrence of photographic practices, aesthetics and subjects.
Talk Soon, a tearaway postcard book with a spiral binding, allows readers to endlessly juxtapose the delightful photographs selected by the two quarantined artists.

PRAISE AND REVIEWS

Brooklyn Rail

Aida Amoako

A wordless dialogue which spanned several months as the world began to lockdown and quarantine amid the worsening pandemic… There is a sense of play and irreverence in their photo-based conversation which utilizes the kitschy and whimsical as much as it does the quotidian… A tribute to the mind’s associative power…

Erik Kessels and Thomas Sauvin’s ‘Talk Soon’ reviewed in the ‘Brooklyn Rail’

Featured spreads are from Talk Soon, the new, spiralbound, collaborative tearaway postcard flipbook from Dutch artist and curator Erik Kessels and French photography collector Thomas Sauvin, produced free-associatively during quarantine. The book, which features equally playful, enigmatic text added to the back of each card by Atelier Éditions co-founder Kingston Trinder, “feels like a tribute to the mind’s associative power,” according to Aida Amoako, who reviews the book for this month’s issue of the Brooklyn Rail. “The photos in Talk Soon, by virtue of being used in a conversation between two artists unable to physically meet because of the COVID-19 pandemic, have gained yet another archival life,” Amoako writes, “becoming a part of the dialogue about this unique moment, despite depicting people and places from at least twenty-five years ago. Rather than presenting the photobook as a nostalgic ode to analog and physical media at a time when physical contact was discouraged, the reanimation of these vernacular photos in this book and its interactivity point instead to a different future, asking how people then might interact with, project onto, and extract meaning from the photographs that will emerge from this time.” continue to blog
