Howardena Pindell: Paintings, 1974-1980

Text by Barry Schwabsky.

Howardena Pindell: Paintings, 1974-1980This publication provides an overview of Howardena Pindell's (born 1943) work from 1974 to 1980, an incredibly innovative period in which she began cutting the canvas in strips and sewing them back together, then building up the surface in elaborate stages. By the late 1970s, sequins, string, hair and even perfume had become a part of her painting.

"Untitled #98" (1977) is reproduced from 'Howardena Pindell: Paintings, 1974-1980.'

Howardena Pindell: intellectual and hedonistic, ironic and lyrical

"Video Drawings: Swimming" (1973-1976) is reproduced from Howardena Pindell: Paintings, 1974-1980, a staff pick on the occasion of Pindell's current exhibition at MCA Chicago, on view through May 20. In his catalog essay, Barry Schwabsky characterizes Pindell's work as, "intellectual and hedonistic, contemplative and active, concrete and imagistic, ironic and lyrical, constructive and spontaneous." continue to blog
