Located in Chinatown, Yu and Me Books is the first Asian American queer-owned bookstore in NYC. It’s also a café and bar that draws readers who want to imbibe in the company of the strong, diverse voices of the local community and who appreciate the centering of immigrant stories. Owner (and chemical engineer) Lucy Yu opened the store out of a desire to create a space where book lovers could dream together, share their passion, strive for change and push systems closer to justice. Having experienced lack of representation within the literary space herself, she’s made it her goal to create an environment where everyone feels welcomed and heard. “It’s something special to read a story that you relate to and see yourself represented after a lifetime of not being able to.” More info here.
