Using discarded items such as toothpicks and bottlecaps, Chris Soal (born 1994) assembles polyp-like sculptures that “spill over” into a given space. Materials shed their function as everyday waste and take on a new, existential status in these organic transformations.

Through his use of discarded ephemera such as toothpicks and bottle caps, along with concrete, rebar, sandpaper and other industrial materials, South African artist Chris Soal (born 1994) interrogates views of nature and culture as a binary concept while challenging societal preconceptions of value and hierarchy.
