Since the early 1990s, Texas-born artist Richard Hawkins (born 1961) has developed a singular practice based upon the intense pleasure of looking and the dynamics of desire. He has described his work as "promiscuously referential," quoting from the histories of artistic representation in sculpture, painting, literature and the performing arts alongside popular culture and cinema in his collages. Titled after the philosophical concept of latent possibilities, Potentialities brings together more than 100 of Hawkins' 21st-century works from eight different series—spanning from acrylic paintings to ceramics and video montages—many of which were made in dialogue with Hawkins' artistic inspirations such as Forrest Bess, Antonin Artaud, Tatsumi Hijikata, Pierre Bonnard and his former professor Mike Kelley.

Beginning with Richard Hawkins' collaged works from the 1990s and ending with his most recent dollhouse brothels, this retrospective volume encompasses themes ranging from male desire, gender issues and pop-star idolization to the struggle of mixed-race Native Americans and the function of hermaphrodite statuary in the Roman era.
