Born and based in Mumbai, Shilpa Gupta (born 1976) addresses India's public sphere characterized by gender and class barriers, religious differences and repressive state apparatuses. Her oeuvre encompasses mediums such as robotics, photography, video, found objects, digital installation and performance. We Last Met in the Mirror is a bilingual (English/German) collection of the artist's most recognizable series such as Blame, Listening Air and Untitled (There Is No Border Here).

For the Barbican’s 34th Curve commission, Mumbai-based artist Shilpa Gupta (born 1976) builds upon her acclaimed project For, in your tongue, I cannot fit (2017–18), a multichannel, multilingual sound installation comprising 100 microphones suspended above 100 metal spikes. A new body of sculptural works extends these themes.
