This volume commemorates a new multimedia project devised by Chinese film and installation artist Cao Fei (born 1978), which synthesizes photography, video installation, virtual reality, documentary footage and archival material to trace a complex portrait of a global agricultural technological revolution and its contradictions. Dash unfolds from Fei’s long-term research on the emergence of smart agriculture in farmlands across Southern and Northwestern China and Southeast Asia. The project evinces how satellite positioning systems converse with ritual geographies and artificial intelligence and traditional experience train one another. Together, these objects and images form a chronicle of technological artifacts reconfiguring the biopolitics of the land. Featuring over 1,500 color images, this eye-catching, colossal volume exhaustively documents Fei’s research. It includes a bevy of texts from contributors including Miuccia Prada, Rem Koolhaas, Sven Beckert, Yuk Hui and Fei herself.
