THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART, NEW YORK

MoMA Now

Highlights from The Museum of Modern Art, New York

Introduction by Glenn D. Lowry. Text by Quentin Bajac, Christophe Cherix, Stuart Comer, Rajendra Roy, Martino Stierli, Ann Temkin.

MoMA Now

Published as a large-format hardcover to celebrate the museum’s 90th anniversary and the October 2019 opening of the new MoMA after its historic expansion

In October 2019, the Museum of Modern Art celebrates its 90th anniversary with the reopening of its extensively renovated and expanded midtown campus. Published to accompany the reopening, MoMA Now is an enlarged and expanded edition of MoMA Highlights, and presents a rich chronological overview of the art of the past 150 years, culled from the Museum’s permanent collection of almost 200,000 objects across 6 curatorial departments. Beginning with a photograph made around 1867 and concluding in 2017, with an Oscar-nominated documentary film, the book introduces readers to some of the most beloved artworks in the museum’s collection—iconic works by Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, Frida Kahlo and Andy Warhol, among many others—as well as lesser-known but equally fascinating and significant objects of art, architecture and design from around the world.

MoMA Now celebrates the richness of the Museum’s collection and the diversity of issues and ideas embraced today. The book is not meant to be a comprehensive overview, nor to provide a definitive statement on the Museum’s collection. On the contrary, it is designed to explore the complexity and variety of possibilities that exist within the collection, and to suggest new and imaginative ways of understanding the works of art that constitute it. Featuring 170 works not included in earlier editions, including a greater representation of works by women, artists of color, and artists from around the world, this new iteration is both a record of the Museum’s past and a statement in anticipation of an exciting future.

Anni Albers, barbaric beauty and 'MoMA Now'

Anni Albers, barbaric beauty and 'MoMA Now'

In celebration of the grand reopening—and radical rehanging—of MoMA's newly expanded galleries, which open to the public this week, we are delighted to feature this beautiful 1925 work on paper by Anni Albers, reproduced from the equally radically recalibrated collection catalogue, MoMA Now—a book that is, of course, heavy on masterpieces, yet well balanced in terms of "artists who are non-male, nonwhite and non-Western," in the words of Roberta Smith, reviewing the opening shows. "Technique was acquired as it was needed and as a foundation for future attempts," Albers is quoted on her work with the Bauhaus weaving workshop. "Unburdened by any practical considerations, this play with materials produced amazing results, textiles striking in their novelty, their fullness of color and texture, and possessing often a quite barbaric beauty." continue to blog

'MoMA Now' points to the future with Kerry James Marshall

'MoMA Now' points to the future with Kerry James Marshall

Today MoMA opens its newly expanded and rehung galleries to the public, and the art world celebrates the Museum's new ethos—a beacon for other institutions that seek to honor yet explode the western canon. "The galleries that visitors now encounter represent the convictions of a new generation of chief curators, who have spent the last several years working closely together to conceive a mode of presentation we find true to our own time," the curators write in MoMA Now, from which Kerry James Marshall's Untitled (policeman) (2015) is reproduced. "Our approach to the Museum's collection reflects far more than individual opinions; it bespeaks an intensive reconsideration of curatorial practice currently underway at museums throughout the world. Grounded in scholarly developments dating back many decades, curatorial thinking has moved beyond the familiar model of a linear history of art, in which the work of one artist, or one movement, inexorably leads to the next in a progressive evolution. The organizing principle of a canon, with its emphasis on defining singular masters, seems out of step with the present-day interest in elucidating a complex fabric of multiple histories, many of which are entirely absent from canon-based narratives." continue to blog

Nan Goldin still speaks volumes in 'MoMA Now'

Nan Goldin still speaks volumes in 'MoMA Now'

Nan Goldin's Nan and Brian in Bed, New York City (1983) is reproduced from MoMA Now, published to accompany The Museum's expanded, radical rehang, which opened this week. One of more than 700 color images in Goldin's 1985 slideshow, The Ballad of Sexual Dependency, as well as the cover image for the artist's seminal 1987 artist's book of the same name, it is not only a game-changing work of art, but a visceral icon of downtown Manhattan's 80s underground scene. "While the work captures the shared experience of a generation ravaged by drug excesses and AIDS, its central, driving theme is the intensity—the highs and the lows—of amorous relationships," the curators write. continue to blog
