Hello, Robot.

Design between Human and Machine

Edited by Mateo Kries, Amelie Klein.

Hello, Robot.

Robotics now: from transport drones and intelligent sensors to the debate around Industry 4.0

Hello, Robot.: Design between Human and Machine investigates how robotics is becoming part of our everyday lives, demonstrating that design in its traditional function as a mediator is indispensable if robots are to become a visible reality and not just remain hidden in washing machines, cars and cash machines.

The volume clarifies where we already encounter these intelligent machines and where we may come across them in the near future: in industry, in the military and in everyday settings; at nurseries and retirement homes; in our bodies and in the cloud; when shopping and having sex; in video games and, of course, in film and literature.

In a series of in-depth essays and interviews, experts such as the science-fiction author Bruce Sterling, novelist Douglas Coupland, architect Philip Beesley, and the design duo Dunne & Raby explore the question of how we deal with our environment becoming increasingly digital, smarter and more autonomous. They highlight our often ambivalent relationship to new technologies and discuss the opportunities and challenges that are posed to us as individuals and as a society in this context.

Hello, Robot. broadens the scope of the discussion to the ethical and political questions with which we are faced today in the light of technological advances in robotics, while confronting us with the contradictions that are often found in the answers to these questions.

PRAISE AND REVIEWS

The Architects Newspaper

Hello, Robot argues that robots are much more than powerful tools, having preoccupied the human imagination for thousands of years in one form or another. As their presence becomes more commonplace, humans begin to soften and anthropomorphize robots.

How do you feel about objects having feelings? Hello, Robot!

How do you feel about objects having feelings? Hello, Robot!

Why, Hello, Robot! AKA’s 2016 “Musio” educational robot for kids and adolescents is reproduced from the Vitra Design Museum’s awesome new survey of design and intelligent machines—in industry, the military, children’s rooms, retirement homes, shopping, sex, art, games, films and literature. Not only is the content cool (to say the least), but the layout was designed by an algorithm (in collaboration with Double Standards, Berlin). And yes, the cover is debossed in a radiant geometric pattern, so that you feel every ridge when you hold it. continue to blog

Can a robot be neurotic, helpless or needy? Hello, Robot!

Can a robot be neurotic, helpless or needy? Hello, Robot!

“Faced with a future that will soon be populated by a multitude of robots,” Tina Thiel writes in Hello, Robot, “the designers Tony Dunne and Fiona Raby ask how we will interact with these robots in daily life and what relationships we will enter into with them. In their view, the idea of robots that simply relieve us of work ultimately falls short of the mark. For the series Technological Dream, therefore, they designed four robots—all non-human in appearance—with different personality structures: an annular, autonomic robot, a neurotic robot in the form of a receptive funnel, a guard robot with which you have to maintain eye contact for a long time before it trusts you enough to share its data, and finally a robot that is intelligent but also helpless and needy.” Featured image is of Robot 3, “Sentinel,” 2007. continue to blog
