Museum Store of the Month: MFA Boston Shop

All hail the MFA Boston Shop, our Museum Store of the Month, September 2022. Housed in one of the greatest and most comprehensive art museums in the world—with a collection that encompasses nearly 500,000 works of art—the MFAShop reflects all of the complexity, scholarship, experimentation, history and discovery of the MFA's renowned collection, "telling a multifaceted story of the human experience—a story that holds unique meaning for everyone."

But this month, that already tall order became taller yet. Because not only did the museum unveil it's gorgeous new branding, but it opened The Obama Portraits Tour, the seventh and final stop on a US tour that began in June 2021.

Visitors to the store will always experience deep art, photography, architecture, design, fashion, and children's book sections, alongside curated fiction, film, history, biography and quirky small press offerings.

Naturally, visitors will also encounter the superb list of new and classic books from MFA Publications.

And now, visitors will encounter books (and fun merch) related to the Barack Obama portrait—painted by Kehinde Wiley—and the Michelle Obama portrait—painted by Amy Sherald—which were originally commissioned by the National Gallery of Art and unveiled in 2018.

Some museum stores carry souvenirs. Some stock deep and challenging books that reflect the unfathomable richness of human culture over millennia. That is what the heroic, unstoppable book buyers at the MFAShop have always done and are doing now.
