Greater New York 2010

Text by Klaus Biesenbach, Cornelia H. Butler, Neville Wakefield.

Greater New York 2010The third iteration of the quintennial exhibition organized by P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center and The Museum of Modern Art, Greater New York 2010 showcases emerging artists who are living and working in the metropolitan New York area. Covering a full range of practices and media, and eagerly anticipated throughout the art community, the 2010 exhibition and catalogue present new works by more than 70 artists of diverse backgrounds, allowing each of them a significant area of space in P.S.1’s expansive galleries in which to show new work or work that has been made in the past five years. This year, Greater New York is organized by Klaus Biesenbach, P.S.1 Director and MoMA Chief Curator at Large; Connie Butler, MoMA Robert Lehman Foundation Chief Curator of Drawing; and Neville Wakefield, P.S.1 Senior Curatorial Advisor.

"While all of the artists in the exhibition are connected geographically to the greater New York area, there are no unified, overarching characteristics that truly connect their practices. Rather, they represent a critically diversified cross section of the city, ranging in age, race, gender, and nationality. Moreover, they work in virtually every imaginable medium, from painting, sculpture, and photography, to video and sound installation, including a number of artists whose work challenges the boundaries between media entirely."

FROM THE BOOK
"Greater New York is a dynamic, living organism that is constantly changing by virtue of the artists' ongoing processes. Individual works in the exhibition mirror this notion of constant evolution...The 2010 exhibition is not only comprised of work representative of the past five years, but it also fosters a productive workshop in which artists are invited to experiment with new ideas within the building."
