Motion graphics emerged in the 1950s in Los Angeles, with synergy from graphic design, animation, film, photography, and even performance. By the 1970s, this new art form was flourishing. This panel brings together three leading artists from the period—Dan Perri, Richard Taylor, and Michael Scroggins—with designers and educators Louise Sandhaus and Michael Worthington to discuss the evolution of one of California's most distinctive contributions to graphic design, influencing everything from film titles to commercial advertising and immersive experiences.

Louise Sandhaus is author of Earthquakes, Mudslides, Fires & Riots: California Graphic Design 1936-1986 . Michael Worthington is founding partner of Counterspace. Film title designer Dan Perri designed iconic sequences for Taxi Driver (1976) and Star Wars (1977). Graphic designer Richard Taylor contributed to such groundbreaking projects as the 7-Up "bubbles commercial" (1975) and Tron (1982). Experimental animator Michael Scroggins was member of the Single Wing Turquoise Bird collective, which forged dynamic light shows for rock concerts in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
