 Selected from photographs taken during the Webbs’ nearly 30-year relationship, this group of 80 paired photographs creates an affectionate play of visual rhymesSlant Rhymes is a photographic conversation between two renowned authors and artists, Magnum photographer Alex Webb and poet and photographer Rebecca Norris Webb. Selected from photographs taken during the Webbs’ nearly 30-year relationship (a friendship evolving into a marriage and creative partnership), this group of 80 photographs is laid out in pairs—one by Alex, one by Rebecca—to create a series of visual rhymes that talk to one another, often at a slant and in intriguing and revealing ways. “Sometimes we find our photographic slant rhymes share a similar palette or tone or geometry,” writes Alex Webb in the introduction to the book. “Other times, our paired photographs strike a similar note—often a penchant for surreal or surprising or enigmatic moments—although often in two different keys.” In this volume, the artists’ photographs—many of which are published here for the first time—are interwoven with short text pieces by the Webbs. A deeply personal book, beautifully produced as an intimate clothbound edition with a tipped-on cover, Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb: Slant Rhymes is an unfinished love poem, told at a slant.
Rebecca Norris Webb, originally a poet, often interweaves her text and photographs in her six books, most notably with her monograph, My Dakota—an elegy for her brother who died unexpectedly—with a solo exhibition of the work at The Cleveland Museum of Art in 2015. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, Le Monde, among other publications, and is in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Cleveland Museum of Art, and George Eastman Museum, Rochester, NY. Alex Webb has published 16 books, including a survey book of 30 years of color work, The Suffering of Light. He’s exhibited at museums worldwide including the Whitney Museum of American Art, NY, the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. A Magnum Photos member since 1979, his work has appeared in the New York Times Magazine, National Geographic, and other publications. He has received numerous awards including a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2007. “Photographs have an uncanny way of reflecting the life and interior world of
a photographer, sometimes revealing insights—often elliptically or obscurely—of which the photographer is not fully aware at the time. When I took the photograph that opens this book, “Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, 1996”—an image that differs in tone from my hard-edged work from the U.S.–Mexico border—I didn’t think about the fact that Rebecca and I had just come together as a couple. It was only later, while looking more closely at the work from that time, that I began to understand the significance of this photograph. Although it’s inhabited by those deep shadows characterizing much of my border work, this particular photograph is quieter, more lyrical. It’s as if its human moments—the couple embracing, the father holding his child—somehow manage to keep the darkness at bay, at least briefly.
The first inkling that there could be some kind of special relationship between our respective photographs was in 2008, when we started putting together our first collaboration, Violet Isle, a book on Cuba that had begun as two separate projects, and which gradually merged into one. When Rebecca and I spread our Cuba prints out on the floor of our hotel room in Cadiz, Spain, we saw how they spoke to one another, creating different and more complex meanings than our individual bodies of work did alone. As Pico Iyer later wrote in the afterword to Violet Isle, sometimes Rebecca’s and my photographs “rhyme.”
But just how do they rhyme? Originally a poet, Rebecca calls them slant rhymes,
or half rhymes, those pairs of words in poetry whose sounds echo one another, but not exactly, such as eyes/light or blue/moon. Sometimes we find that our photographic slant rhymes share a similar palette or tone or geometry. Other times, our paired photographs strike a similar note—often a penchant for surreal or surprising or enigmatic moments—although often in two different keys. If my photographs tend toward a bluesy A minor, like Albert King’s Born Under a Bad Sign, then Rebecca’s work favors an elegiac D minor, like the Bach partita she so loves.
We made this book, Slant Rhymes, from nearly thirty years of work, photographs taken or shared during the time we’ve known each another. This period covers our initial rich friendship that began in 1988, to our marriage in 1999, to our collaborative books— Violet Isle (2009) and Memory City (2014)—and to our current works in progress, some collaborative ( The City Within) and some monographs (Rebecca’s Night Calls).We’d like to think that, when taken together, these slant rhymes create a kind of long, elliptical, unfinished love poem. - Alex Webb | FROM THE ARTBOOK BLOG CORY REYNOLDS | DATE 7/13/2017 “Manase, Samoa” by Alex Webb (top) and “Faith, South Dakota” by Rebecca Norris Webb are reproduced from Slant Rhymes, the couple’s new book of recently paired photographs made over the course of three decades.
