In Memoriam: Julia Reyes Taubman

"Julie was a quixotic mix of hippie, task master, professional, soothsayer, stoner fashionista and mom. Her taste was unpredictable but always impeccable — a sign of true genius. Her commitment to making everything as good as it could possibly be, with unlimited attempts to get it right, drove me crazy as her architect. But it always resulted in startling, beautiful invention. I treasure my time getting to work with her and becoming her friend. She was a rare bird, one with endless warmth and love and gumption. She will be missed by legions of fans around the world. - Charles Renfro

We will miss Julie Reyes Taubman, photographer, author, philanthropist and indefatigable founder of the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit. She died on Sunday, January 28, at the age of fifty at her home in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, of cancer.

In Memoriam: Julia Reyes Taubman

We had the pleasure of working with Ms. Taubman on Detroit: 138 Square Miles, her epic, 480-page photobook-as-portrait of the city she loved. Her passion and generosity were evident in every gesture; the work itself was remarkable, spanning seven years and more than 30,000 photographs. Below is a selection in memoriam. To read more about Ms. Taubman's life, continue to the Detroit Free Press.
