Matthew Marks Book Launch: The Collected Hairy Who Publications 1966-69

Join ARTBOOK | D.A.P. and Matthew Marks Gallery Wednesday, July 8 for the launch of The Collected Hairy Who Publications 1966-1969, published to accompany What Nerve!, on view at Matthew Marks Gallery through August 14. Curator and editor Dan Nadel will host a panel with Hairy Who members Jim Falconer, Art Green, Gladys Nilsson, Suellen Rocca and Karl Wirsum, followed by a signing.

Matthew Marks Book Launch: The Collected Hairy Who Publications 1966-69

The Hairy Who was comprised of six Chicago artists renowned for their hallucinatory visions of the human body. Much of the group’s legacy rests on four self-published “comic” books made to accompany their exhibitions. Among the first artist’s books executed in full color, these publications are an exemplary model of collaboration. The key to their influence, however, is their formal inventiveness. Every page teems with unforgettable characters rendered in energetic lines and high-key color. Collected here for the first time in a single volume, these rare publications are reproduced actual-size and in full color. Accompanying them are a scholarly essay and an extensive archive of Hairy Who posters, exhibition photographs, and ephemera.
