Fausta Squatriti: Ecce Homo

Edited by Evelina Schatz. Text by Evelina Schatz, Angela Madesani, Elisabetta Longari, Michail Pogarskij.

Fausta Squatriti (born 1941) is an Italian sculptor, painter and poet, active since the late 1960s in the Italian avant garde. Since 1987, the artist has used her diverse practice to investigate the dichotomies and extremes of human nature. This publication presents four themed cycles made between 1998 and 2009 that incorporate collaged imagery and extreme material juxtapositions.
Fausta Squatriti: Ecce Homo

FROM THE BOOK
"Fausta creates her own language of symbols, her own personal art-alphabet to describe the different facets of our reality; a language whose origins go back to prehistory, to cave paintings, to ancient magical ruins, to Egyptian hieroglyphics, and to the heavenly signs of pagan cultures. With the extraordinary insight of the artist, she juxtaposes photographs of the insane with these symbols. From one emanates a sense of loss and the inability to defend oneself; from another, a capacity for gentleness we can never know, whereas yet another transmits an infinite loneliness…Fausta Squatriti's art reveals the fragility and instability of our inner world, poised on the edge of the abyss. But at the same time she manages to dispel a certain fear at the sight of the abyss, into which we already envision not so much an ordinary fall as the entrance to completely different 'other' worlds."

Michail Pogarskij, excerpted from O Stay! Thou Art So Fair! in Ecce Homo.
