Displaced Fractures

Edited by Heike Munder, Thomas D. Trummer. Text by Karsten Harries, Holger Birkholz, Heike Munder, Thomas D. Trummer.

Through the work of a renowned group of international artists, Displaced Fractures explores the idea of architecture as human surrogate--where the cracks in buildings are analogous to the fissures of human existence. Selected artists include Phyllida Barlow, Tacita Dean, Emilie Ding, Klara Lidén, Ulrich Rückriem, Kilian Rüthemann, Oscar Tuazon and Klaus Winichner.

FROM THE BOOK
"Art has always possessed a keen sense of what is brittle, porous, and fragile in man. The artists represented in this exhibition, however, negotiate humanity's fault lines not directly on the body but instead in architectures that stand in for it. The fractures and sutures of buildings serve as metaphors for the rifts that run through human existence. The concept expressed in the title, 'displaced fractures,' shifts the idea back to the body; it comes from the medical terminology, where it describes the phenomenon whereby a bone fracture may appear in a place that is different from the site of the main stress. A displacement takes place, cause and effect dissociate, because energies as much as symptoms become visible in strange places. The same idea is also expressed in psychology, where the term 'displacement' designates a transfer, repression, or sublimation, as well as a psychological defense mechanism that helps an individual cope with menacing tendencies that result from drives and desires."

Heike Munder and Thomas D. Trummer, excerpted from Displaced Fractures in Displaced Fractures.
