The must-have collection of Pfieffer’s effervescent, energetic photographs
In 2001, Edition Patrick Frey published Welcome Aboard, a compilation of photographs by Swiss artist Walter Pfeiffer (born 1946) from 1980 to 2000. The book laid the foundation for his rise from contributor to gay zines to world-renowned fashion photographer for luxury brands. Now, Chez Walti provides a new collection of his work from 2000 to the present, showing how Pfeiffer fine-tuned and renewed his photographic gaze: absorbing influences from the current zeitgeist while remaining unmistakably himself in both his personal and commissioned work. Pfeiffer's light, witty touch and unfailing eye for beauty are the hallmarks of his images of gorgeous guys and cheeky gals, lush still lifes and bucolic landscapes, chic fashion and bare skin. Chez Walti catapults viewers into Walter Pfeiffer's weightless parallel universe, whose magic has only intensified over the past two decades.

Alessandro Merola
While Pfeiffer was a trailblazer for his times, at the heart of his repertoire lays a charged and sexy realism that set the mood of what would follow in fashion, his new book contains enough knockouts to evidence his enduring originality, appeal and attitude – if you needed reminding, of course.

Featured spreads are from new release Chez Walti, Edition Patrick Frey’s vivid and incorrigible 418-page collection of Walter Pfeiffer photographs, made 2000–2022. In regards to photography, he says, “everything depends on the model. Is he or she funny and playful? Or are they just lame ducks? Worst-case scenario: they really do aspire to become a professional model. I have to enjoy photographing them, otherwise it doesn’t work. It’s the same with a still life or a landscape. I can’t plan it in advance, any more than with people. I have to be there and see it for myself. A still life can, admittedly, be a little embellished, so to speak. But when it comes to landscape, I can immediately look at it and think: That’s it!” In regards to his drawing practice, he says, “I need change, and I always need new people. As long as I can, I’ll just keep on fishing and sometimes somebody will take the bait. People who are captivating, and independent-minded, are a great source of inspiration for me. … There are very few of these one-off individuals. … I’m interested in creating a kind of dream world.” continue to blog
