The Sun Went to Their Heads: Louise Sandhaus at Palm Springs Modernism Week

If you're in town for Palm Springs' annual Modernism Week, don't miss Earthquakes, Mudslides, Fires & Riots author Louise Sandhaus speaking Thursday, February 18 at the Annenberg Theater at the Palm Springs Art Museum! In this hour-long presentation starting at 9AM, Sandhaus will "share, elaborate and celebrate the warmth, sizzle and sunlit brilliance of Modern graphic design from the Golden State."

The Sun Went to Their Heads: Louise Sandhaus to Lecture on California, Graphic Design & Modernism during Palm Springs Modernism Week

Modern design produced in California represents an array of the vivid tastes and flavors of the West Coast. It is a design language that often speaks not demurely, but with a declarative California accent. While much has been written about California’s contributions to architecture, furniture design and craft, until the recent publication of Earthquakes, Mudslides, Fires & Riots, little has been said about the state’s distinctive contributions to graphic design.

Emboldened by a freedom from tradition, important graphic contributions took seed, flourished and, in some cases, grew into a globally influential revolution in this everyday art. While Ray and Charles Eames, Alvin Lustig and Saul Bass have received much-deserved attention, “Earthquakes…” widens the purview to include much that has been overlooked, including iconoclastic book designer Merle Armitage, John Follis’ graphic delights for the covers of Arts & Architecture, the exquisitely-crafted invitations and announcements that emanated from John and Marilyn Neuhart’s Hand Press, along with little-discussed Modernist graphics for the screen, the “hippie modernists” and those many California girls whose contributions to design scored attention internationally.
