From elegant nudes to celebrity portraiture: the incredible breadth of the famed Vogue photographer
This new monograph invites readers into Horst P. Horst’s (1906–1999) world of elegance, luxury and fantasy. Including the photographer’s elegant nudes, fashion photography, celebrity portraits and still-life studies, this luxurious volume reveals the extraordinary breadth of Horst’s work in both color and black and white.
Before he adopted the name by which he is known, Horst Paul Albert Borhmann studied carpentry in his small German town, leaving in 1930 for Paris to study under architect Le Corbusier. He soon found himself in the orbit of Vogue photographer Baron George Hoyningen-Huene, for whom he worked as an assistant. Just one year later, Horst published his first photograph in French Vogue, a full-page advertisement for Klytia perfume.
Horst would be associated with Vogue magazine for the next six decades, changing the face of fashion photography with his impeccably posed and lighted images that transformed his models into versions of the classical sculptures and Surrealist art he so admired.
An international figure, traveling from Paris to New York and beyond, Horst chronicled and participated in the interwoven worlds of art, design, performance and glamorous high society.

"Jean Patchett, bathing suit by Brigance" (1951) is reproduced from Silvana's charming new monograph on the iconic twentieth-century Vogue fashion photographer, Horst P. Horst. Socialites, models, nudes, still lives, actors and public intellectuals populate the pages of this concise volume, which spans the 1930s to the 1980s. "In the modern age, surrounded by images of brutality and photographs hastily snatched, we crave Horst's flawless vision of beauty more than ever," Victoria and Albert curator Susanna Brown writes. "His pictures evoke a bygone age of elegance and serenity, an atmosphere of luxury and fantasy. It might all be an illusion, created within the confines of his photographic studio, but what a wonderful illusion it is." continue to blog
