FROM THE BOOK
"Nationalism and national identity are recurrent themes in the visual arts and art history. In recent years, a contractive national identity, based on an increasing suspicion and fear of immigrants, has become a dominant feature of Western contemporary society and politics. Although artists deal with nationalism and national identity, the artworks themselves are often not imbued with a particular national(ist) meaning. Rather, they are interpreted as such, made into national capital by the people analyzing the works. Art historical interpretation is always constituted by borders, whether they be cultural, social, political, or geographical."

Hendrik Folkerts, excerpted from Monumentalism.
