"It took a lot of fumbling to find an ordinary word that accurately describes the impression produced by each of Martin Szekely’s tables, desks, shelves, chairs, and boxes…How can I give a simple description of the feeling of 'one', of unity and resolution, created by the discretion and evanescence of the objects in question? How to describe the feeling of plenitude without sounding too mystical? The American Donald Judd, who was a significant art critic as well as an artist, used the term 'singleness', echoing Michel de Certeau’s 'practical science of the singular'. And for want of a better term, I shall describe Martin Szekely’s furniture in term of a singular absence of duality. The pieces appear all in one homogeneous block, often as an enigma, and always as a noun: chair, table, desk, cupboard, box, console table, armchair, footstool, mirror. In most instances, these common nouns are their necessary condition."
