The 2001 File: Harry Lange and the Design of the Landmark Science Fiction Film

In 1965, Harry Lange was working as an illustrator and and future projects section head at NASA under German rocket scientist Wernher von Braun. By chance, he and a colleague ran into a friend who mentioned he was writing a space film with Stanley Kubrick. One day later, Lange was part of the team that created 2001: A Space Odyssey, one of the greatest science fiction films ever made. This double mounted perspective and plan view of the Orion-III space plane is reproduced from Reel Art Press' 336-page blockbuster featuring more than 450 largely unpublished preliminary drawings, paintings and designs for NASA and 2001: A Space Odyssey.
