Designed and photographed by the artist, this is the most comprehensive monograph on German artist Gregor Schneider (born 1969) to date. Schneider is known for his psychologically intense installations--interventions in common logic that transform existing architecture into frightening and disorienting spaces. This book guides the reader through two walk-in sculptures whose rooms have been doubled or duplicated via mirrors and doors.

In 2007, German artist Gregor Schneider staged a meticulously choreographed queue of visitors in front of Berlin’s State Opera House. In this artist’s book, he presents his “libretto” for this performance piece, along with photographs, and takes stock of the project. Schneider is represented in New York by Gladstone Gallery.

White or "clean" torture aims to destroy a person's psyche without leaving any demonstrable traces. Going off images from the U.S. prison camp in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, Gregor Schnieder here creates interrogation-room and cell-like spaces and inserts them into existing museum architecture.

When Rosa Martinez, in her role as a co-curator of the 2005 Venice Biennale, commissioned Gregor Schneider's Cube Venice, a 50-foot-square tower of veiled scaffolding designed in tribute to the Ka'aba in Mecca--a sacred and undocumented site forbidden to non-worshippers--she and Schneider agreed that Piazza San Marco, the plaza in front of the conversely very touristy cathedral of San Marcos, was the ideal place to display it. As the festival approached, that proximity worried Venice city authorities. In the end, their refusal to grant necessary permissions was supported by Italy's Ministry of Culture. Schneider asked that black pages be substituted for his planned materials in the Biennale's catalogue, but Cube Venice and the debates it provoked are documented here.

Chosen to represent Germany in the 2001 Venice Biennale, Gregor Schneider has, since the 1980s, dedicated himself to building rooms as an expression of his art. The focus of his work has been an ordinary tenement building in Germany, known as "Haus u r," where he has lived while transforming it into a building of great atmospheric density though the process of continuous rebuilding.This book documents Schneider's work on the German Pavilion for the Venice Biennale.
