Photographer, filmmaker and war correspondent Robert Capa (1913–54) is a legend of photojournalism. His work—widely recognized and disseminated, although sometimes criticized for its truthfulness—is integral to the history of the photograph. Capa covered all the major midcentury events: from the Front Populaire in France to the Spanish Civil War, World War II and finally the First Indochina War, where he lost his life. Robert Capa in the Making retraces Capa’s work through images from private collections published for the first time. Together with his most iconic works, these rarely seen images construct a complete story, particularly how they were used and published. Reproductions of original newspaper articles illustrated by Capa’s images create new narratives through which to judge his documentation. Le Monde journalist Michel Lefebvre interprets the hidden details omitted through the years; the writing on the backs of the prints, a detail on a note, a place left out or a date that changes are all clues that reconstruct this immense corpus.

Hungarian American photographer Robert Capa (1913–54) lived a short but eventful life. Engaged in the highly dangerous occupation of combat and adventure photography, Capa risked his life many times for his reportage, and ultimately died while at work during the First Indochina War. This volume traces the main stages of his career, featuring Capa’s most iconic works—images that now loom large in the canon of 20th-century photography. Not only a retrospective of Capa's work, the book also aims to reveal the photographer’s personality through more than 300 of his black-and-white images. Including several points of view of the same event on different occasions, as if to reproduce a movement of field-counter-field, the volume also conveys the cinematic character of his work.

Robert Capa’s Death in the Making was published in 1938 as a poignant tribute to the men and women, civilians and soldiers alike, fighting in Spain against Franco’s fascist insurrection. The book included only one year of images from the Republican position, but covered the spectrum of emotions of a civil war, from the initial excitement to the more harrowing realities of modern warfare. But over time, after World War II and rising anti-communist paranoia in the United States, association with the Spanish Civil War was a liability and the book became obscured. Today, however, Death in the Making has reached cult status, not least because copies are hard to find (particularly ones with Capa’s famous Falling Soldier image on the dust jacket), but also for its passionate call to defend democracy.
With new scans of all the images, this remastered facsimile of the original edition reproduces the original layout by photographer André Kertész, the original caption text by Capa and preface by writer Jay Allen. The muddy 1938 publication is entirely transformed by high-quality printing to reflect the beauty and pathos of the original intention. This edition also includes a new essay with new research on the making and the reception of the original book, and a complete checklist identifying the author, location and date of each image. The most important new information is that Robert Capa and Gerda Taro are not the only photographers in the book, but also included was work by their good friend and colleague Chim, later known as David Seymour.
Robert Capa is one of the most well-known photojournalists of the twentieth century. Born Endre Ernö Friedmann (Budapest, Hungary, October 22, 1913–Thai-Binh, Indochina, May 25, 1954) to a Jewish family of tailors, he studied in Berlin, then fled to Paris in 1933. Quickly gaining an international reputation for his photographs of the Spanish Civil War, he later escaped to New York in 1939. He covered World War II as an Allied photographer, cofounded Magnum Photos in 1947 (with Chim, among others), and made several books based on his photographs of travel in Europe, the USSR, and Israel. He died after stepping on a landmine in 1954.
Gerda Taro was one of the first women to be recognized as a photojournalist, and the first to be killed while reporting on war. Born Gerta Pohorylle in Stuttgart, Germany (August 1, 1910–Brunete, Spain, July 26, 1937) and raised in Leipzig in a middle-class Jewish family, she fled to Paris in 1933. She traveled back and forth from Paris to Spain for the first year of the Spanish Civil War, and while covering the battle of Brunete, she was struck by a tank and died.
Chim, born Dawid Szymin (Warsaw, Poland, November 20, 1911–Suez, Egypt, November 10, 1956), arrived in Paris in 1932 and within two years was a regular contributor to Regards with his photographs of the Popular Front. He covered the entirety of the Spanish Civil War and escaped France in 1939 for New York. He returned to Europe in 1947 and established himself as a foreign correspondent with the byline David Seymour. In 1956 he was killed while covering the Suez Crisis.

Even in his lifetime, Robert Capa was described as the greatest war photographer in the world. It was an ironic achievement for a man who loathed war, but to this day, no one better embodies the photographer as cultural soldier and no one’s work better encapsulates the violence and brutality of the twentieth century than Capa. This volume presents a rich selection of his work as a war photographer, starting from the images that established his fame: his documentation of the horrors of the Spanish Civil War from 1936–1939 and the Chinese resistance to the Japanese invasion in 1938. It continues on to World War II--including Capa’s stunning photographs of the D-Day landing in Normandy, where on June 6, 1944, he swam to shore alongside the second assault wave of American troops--and on to the first Arab–Israel conflict in 1948, before concluding with the First Indochina War, in which Capa joined a French regiment and eventually lost his life. Today, the wars of the twentieth century may have transformed from wounds into scars, but Capa’s images remain as devastating as ever, describing the trauma of war through a civilian’s eyes, and reminding us that despite years of loss and destruction, humanity manages to persist. Born Endre Friedmann in Hungary, where he was nicknamed “cápa” (shark) at school, Robert Capa (1913–1954) adopted the name by which he is remembered in the early 1930s, following his relocation from Berlin to Paris. His first published photograph was a portrait of Leon Trotsky giving a speech on “The Meaning of the Russian Revolution” in Copenhagen, in 1932; his most famous work was his record of D-Day, at Omaha Beach. Capa was killed by a land mine, during an assignment on the First Indochina War.

In an almost novelistic fashion, the pictures--presented chronologically--tell as much about the photographer as they do about the times Capa was chronicling. --Margarett Loke, ARTnews “His coverage of the Spanish civil war established Capa's reputation as a peerless battlefield photojournalist... But he was also a man who loved making pictures of beautiful women, famous men and grand parties. Often overlooked when discussing the Capa legacy, those too, were his life's work. Both Capas--the raconteur of high society and the fearless witness to war--are evident in Robert Capa: Photographs. The two sides of Capa's work may seem irreconcilable, but they're not. He was recording one world. His own.” --Allison Adato, Life Magazine

Robert Capa's Photographs of the Spanish Civil War
Published by Aperture. Introduction by Esperanza Aguirre Gil de Biedma, Jos» Guirao Cabrera and Cornell Capa.
In 1936, the rebellion of monarchists and fascists led by General Franco, in alliance with Hitler and Mussolini, mobilized anti-fascists all over the world, among them Robert Capa. During the entire period of the war, Capa traveled throughout the Loyalist-held areas of Spain photographing battles, cities under siege, and the chaos of a modern nation at war with itself. One series of images documents the heroic Loyalist defense of Madrid; another the mass exodus of Catalonians from Barcelona to the French border. His iconic photograph of a Loyalist militiaman who has just been shot shocked the world with its brutal immediacy. Capa's pictures not only illuminated the courage of the soldiers who carried on against overwhelming odds but also galvanized compassion for the innocent and injured.
