Text by Hans Willemse, Bart de Baere, Viktor Misiano, Anders Kreuger.Panamarenko (born 1940), one of Belgium's most original and beloved contemporary artists, is an artistic innovator and an engineer, working at the borders of science and art. His 1960s happenings put Antwerp on the global art map, but he is now best known for his spectacular inventions. These constructions—flying carpets, mechanical birds, backpack helicopters—are frequently the result of rigorous experiment and meticulous calculation. Panamarenko is a witty empiricist, invested in the processes of making and experimenting for their own sakes, and a "workbench visionary," as Anders Kreuger calls him in his catalogue essay. Universum surveys Panamarenko's art from its beginnings to the present. Published to accompany a major exhibition at Antwerp's M HKA that brings together objects, drawings, models and editions organized around the three poles of objects, actions and thinking, this beautifully realized volume is a detailed exploration of Panamarenko's mental universe and artistic process.

Published by Ludion. Artwork by Panamarenko. For more than 30 years, the Belgian visionary Panamarenko; engineer, poet, artist, physicist, inventor--has been conducting meticulous studies of the natural world and various scientific principles. He analyzes the secrets of the universe, gravity, and other energetic mysteries, and formulates both logical and well-considered solutions. His work is poetic, the result of a seamless coalescence of artistic skill and scientific research; the outcome of which can take the form of a flying saucer, backpack helicopter, flying carpet, zeppelin, solar powered car, submarine, or prehistoric mechanical bird. Each of his spectacular constructions possesses not only a peculiar beauty and naive playfulness, but also a degree of conspicuous consideration. In 2001, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Ghent held a retrospective of Panamarenko's work, for which the artist designed and wrote this oversized catalogue--a work of art in its own right.

Introduction by Jon Thompson.Panamarenko's extraordinary sculptures--flying machines, submarines, and cars--blend science and art, technology and fantasy, the mechanical and the organic. For over thirty years this Belgian artist, who adopted the pseudonym Panamarenko in the 1960s, has obsessively explored movement, flight, space, energy and the force of gravity in his work. This new catalogue documents a major exhibition of his sculptures and drawings in London--an astounding spectacle that includes a giant flying saucer and his renowned Aeromodeller, an airship that fills an entire gallery. Panamarenko is in a sense one of the most original and visionary artists of the postwar period: his works are aesthetic inventions rather than representations; they resonate with the poetic and fantastical dimensions of the different forms of earthly and extra-terrestrial motion--like hovering, floating, and flying--as well as his fascination with systems of energy, magnetic fields, and the cosmos. This lavishly illustrated book has been written and designed by the artist himself.
