Originally conceived by the Austin-based Swiss American artist duo Teresa Hubbard and Alexander Birchler (born 1965 and 1962 respectively) for the Swiss Pavilion at the 2017 Venice Biennial, Flora reconstructs the life story of the American artist Flora Mayo, who in the 1920s had a romantic relationship with the Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti.
While Giacometti is now one of the most famous artists of the 20th century, Mayo has vanished from history, her work destroyed and her life forgotten. In Flora, Hubbard / Birchler reanimate Mayo’s gripping biography from a feminist perspective, linking reconstruction and documentation to form a multi-layered type of narrative.
The catalog, produced for an exhibition at the Bayerische Akademie der Schönen Künste , records the artists‘ research and documents the installation.

Sound Speed Marker focuses on Hubbard / Birchler's recent trilogy of video installations--Grand Paris Texas (2009), Movie Mountain (Méličs) (2011) and Giant (2014)--which explore the physical conditions and social character of the cinematic experience, with particular respect to film's relationship to place and the kinds of traces movies leave behind. Published on the occasion of the touring exhibition Sound Speed Marker presented at Ballroom Marfa, the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin, and the Blaffer Museum of Art at the University of Houston, this richly illustrated volume includes all three components of Hubbard / Birchler's newest trilogy, as well as related photography and sculpture. Four essays and an interview with the artists contribute new scholarship in examining the genesis of the works.

Slow pan shots, endless loops, a somnambulistic slipstream of images and puzzling plot lines--Teresa Hubbard, born in 1965 in Dublin, and Alexander Birchler, born in 1962 in Baden, Switzerland, credit Eadweard Muybridge's early motion pictures and the silent films of Thomas Edison and the Lumičre Brothers as important influences on the deliberately slow cinematography of their fascinating and elaborately produced videos. No Room to Answer examines the artist couple's interest in the early history of photography and film, demonstrating how their picturesque, brilliantly colored images craft stories without a beginning or an end in vague, repetitious loops in which calm and movement, reality and dream, are precisely balanced. Starting with Hubbard and Birchler's early staged photographs, this monograph presents all of the artists' key works from 1991 to the present and includes three essays as well as a comprehensive interview with the artists.

A house with a swimming pool and three protagonists: an older woman, a teenager and a gardener. The women never meet; the gardener sees everything. The narrative seems to be about the relationship between a mother and daughter--and its rhythm corresponds to the playing of a piano, to a swimmer gliding through the pool and to water splashing in the shower. However, there is more to House with Pool than the fictional tale told by the film; it is also the history of a modernist home in 1950s Texas, where the artists--Teresa Hubbard and Alexander Birchler--lived and worked for a few months, taking their cues from their immediate environment. This publication is devoted to the film, represented here through color stills, photographs, sketches, and plans that visualize its aesthetically seductive, affirmative, yet ambiguous story.
